Exhibit 03: How to Teach Your Robot in 5 Minutes

fortiss demonstrates the benefits of combining semantic process knowledge and domain specific user interfaces to enable the use of robots for small lot size production. The shop-floor worker is able to define an assembly task, for example a gearbox, without prior expert knowledge in robotics. The process is defined by configuring geometric constraints between objects in an intuitive 3D interface. Compared to classical programming with a teach-pad, this can lead to a time reduction of up to 85%. In contrast to low-level programming languages, this process description is easily understandable by other users.

Fortiss: How to Teach Your Robot in 5 Minutes

Use case

  • Precise industrial assembly
  • SME-suitable small lot production
  • Leverage worker’s high-level process knowledge for automation

Technological innovations

  • Human-understandable and reusable semantic process descriptions – object-centric and goal-oriented
  • Easy integration of new workpieces and consistent use throughout the system
  • Domain-specific user interfaces

Benefits

  • Considerable reduction of time needed to program new robot tasks
  • Executing the same process on different robots without reprogramming
  • No extensive operator training required
  • Improves the acceptance of robots on SME shop floors
