Intuitive teaching of robots using a sensor driven and cognition enabled framework

Software components

Several software applications that both ensure economically efficient use (SME-Trainer in exhibit no. 5) and provide the necessary functionalities for SME-compatible robots will be integrated into all seven exhibits. This includes planners that generate robot programs (e.g. Assembly Planner and Grasp Planner, as can be seen below) as well as software modules for the intelligent integration of different automation components (in exhibit no.1 and exhibit no. 6).

Assembly Planner and Grasp Planner

Assembly planning and grasp planning are two important components for successful automation of manufacturing processes. DLR develops within the SMErobotics project new methods for planning that support the end-user at setting up robotic applications. The assembly sequence planner is able to automatically generate feasible sequences from CAD data. The sequences can be directly transformed to robot programs, enabling a fast and easy automation for new products. Moreover, the assembly sequence planner supports product designers to investigate the geometric feasibility of new products.

Grasp planning attends importance during the planning stage of new robotic work cells. The grasp planner decides how to hold an object or an assembly with a certain gripper. Given shapes and physical data of objects, a database of various possible grasps is created automatically. The so obtained database contains grasps whose robustness is verified with virtual simulations that reproduce real-world effects on the object and the robot. Its application ranges from two finger grippers to robotic hands.
