Exhibit No. 5: Robot CoWorker

An assembly colleague you can easily train

Imagine a robot system, which is instructed within few minutes or hours by ordinary employees to recognise new parts, perform careful assembly – and even call an operator when something is wrong. That is exactly what the Robot CoWorker, developed by Danish Technological Institute, demonstrates. Using a complete integration between robot, sensors, algorithms and easily instructable interfaces, the Robot CoWorker is a universal tool for automating high-mix low-volume production.

Use case

  • In this case example, the robot handles an assembly step in an electronic production line: the transformer is placed into a heat sink at an assembly station
  • Many variants exist and each individual product is made to order
  • LEAN Production: Transformers are picked directly from shipping cartons and heat sinks are picked directly from pallets
  • Sensors verify the position of parts, which make the process reliable without the need for hours of engineering
  • The safety system detects humans and plans work space and movements to avoid emergency stops.

Technological innovations

  • The robot is easily instructed on a tablet interface using skills
  • Sensors and, the robot are instructed in the same intuitive interface
  • Motion planning and collision checks are integrated invisibly to the users
  • The PC-based control system works on any robot and sensor setup.
  • Situation assessment learns “normal” robot behavior and detects any unexpected deviation
