Exhibit No. 2: CoWeldRob - the welding robot assistant

Bringing cognitive and collaborative functions to the shop floor

The welding robot assistant is suited for small lot size weld jobs. It is able to localise workpieces, to automatically generate programs, to learn from the worker and to collaborate with him. The goal is to significantly reduce the programming effort for automated production in small and medium-sized welding businesses. For this important branch of the European Economy high programming and program adaptation efforts are the major obstacle for automation of welding tasks for which skilled workers are becoming increasingly scarce.

  • Localisation of weld parts in workcell with point cloud sensors
  • Automatic program generation from scene model, work piece model, sensor data and input of a human process expert
  • Robust handling of uncertainties: no need of rigid fixtures for exact positioning of components
  • Robot can learn from the welder's process know-how and continuously improve its performance over time

  • Automatic, model-based program generation and collision avoidance: reconfiguration of robot cell for new process through exchange of the end-effector and the numerical model of the manufacturing technology
  • Rapid system adaptation and extension: new hardware components are configured from database to speed up integration
  • Interfaces to off-the-shelve robot controllers
  • Smart combination of intuitive interfaces like touchscreen tablet and robot-hand guiding
